- The purpose of a system reliability analysis is to acquire information about a system of interest relative to making decisions based on considerations of availability, reliability, and safety as well as any inherent engineering risks. The philosophy and guidelines for a system analysis have been discussed in several excellent introductory chapters by David Haasl in a Fault Tree Handbook (1981). Broadly speaking, there are two important aspects to a system analysis: (1) an Inductive analysis stage and (2) A deductive analysis stage. In the inductive analysis stage we gather and organize available information on the system.
